Client Spotlight: Te Amo Atawhai

Te Amo Atawhai – meaning a ‘shoulder to bear, through kindness’ – was created with the belief that true care comes from compassion and cultural understanding.

About Te Amo Atawhai
Te Amo Atawhai embraces a Te Ao Māori worldview of health and wellbeing (hauora) and strives to deliver culturally safe care. With 10 years of experience in the industry, founders Shanae and Courtney Mihaere recognised the need for a more culturally informed approach to healthcare for Māori and Pasifika people. This insight led to the vision of Te Amo Atawhai, which provides culturally appropriate and holistic healthcare services to help break down the barriers that often prevent communities from accessing care. Their slogan “Wellness Woven in Culture” is a powerful reminder that true wellbeing is strengthened by cultural values and identity. Te Amo Atawhai’s approach is grounded in whanaungatanga (relationships), ensuring that clients receive a personable support service, upholding dignity and respect throughout their journey.

The work they do
Te Amo Atawhai offers culturally tailored services to Māori, Pasifika, and all people, helping clients feel at ease while receiving care in their own home and out in the community. Their approach fosters an open and trusting relationship, reducing whakamā (shyness or embarrassment) and ultimately benefiting hauora (overall wellbeing). The services range from home management to personal care and community outings, each designed to meet the individual needs of kiritaki, supporting them to live life to the fullest.

The challenge
As a new provider in 2023, Te Amo Atawhai faced the challenge of raising awareness within communities. With a focus on Māori and Pasifika people, they knew that building relationships kanohi ki te kanohi (face-to-face) was crucial, and the team made it a priority to establish this early on. They are always welcoming new relationships and encouraging community groups, iwi, and whānau to learn more about their hauora and the services that are available.

Looking ahead
Te Amo Atawhai’s future is bright, with exciting developments underway. The team is settling into their head office in Hastings and continuing to form new relationships and expand their reach across the country. With strong foundations in place, the business is poised for growth, and they are always seeking passionate kaimahi (staff) to join their mission of ‘Wellness Woven in Culture’.

Shanae reflects on the rewarding nature of the work Te Amo Atawhai is doing:
"The passion we see within the communities, with people wanting to support and uplift each other, makes this such a rewarding industry to be in. We’re proud to be able to serve Māori, Pasifika, and all people to benefit their hauora."
