Scott’s Flooring: One man, two businesses - and a whole lot of happy customers
When you work with Scott’s Flooring, you deal with just one person from start to finish: owner-operator Mike Scott. And that’s exactly how he likes it. With his wife Sammi by his side, Mike’s built a flooring business that runs on trust, pride, and a personal touch.
"We’ve got really satisfied customers because nothing gets lost in translation, from quote through to installation and invoicing."
Since 2011, Scott’s Flooring has been serving homeowners, landlords, commercial tenants, property managers and investors across Hawke’s Bay. Whether it’s a family upgrading their home, a retiree wanting peace of mind, or a property investor looking for efficient turnaround, Mike delivers with genuine care and quality workmanship.
Standing out in a competitive market
Mike’s commitment to doing the job right is backed by specialist knowledge and experience, not only in flooring installation but also in recommending the right products for long-term performance.
Scott’s Flooring is the only business in Hawke’s Bay offering recycled Sleepyhead foam underlay - lifting, removing and recycling the old underlay as part of a more sustainable approach.
"People come to me because I go the extra mile. I don’t just sell a product, I solve a problem."
From dealing with tight turnarounds to sorting tricky issues on site, Mike gets the job done with integrity and attention to detail. That’s why so many of his clients skip the second quote - once they’ve read the reviews and seen the quality of his work, they’re confident they’ve found the right guy.
Earning trust, one job at a time
Sammi beams with pride when she talks about Mike’s efforts, and Mike doesn’t take that praise for granted. He’s been making a habit of asking happy clients to leave Google reviews, which has paid off in a big way. One client read the reviews, picked up the phone, booked the job - confident they’d found the right guy.
"We’re always asking where people found us - more and more, it’s the reviews and the website doing the talking."
From flooring to full renovations
In 2022, Mike expanded his business offering by launching Scott’s Building Services. It was a natural evolution as he saw how many clients needed a more comprehensive, wraparound renovation service. Now, with both flooring and renovation under his belt, Mike can offer a start-to-finish solution with a trusted network of trades and a consistent point of contact.
"At Scott’s Building Services, we’re not too big for the small jobs. We make time for our clients and always go that little bit further."
A website that supports his growth
Mike launched his first website with OMG Solutions to help improve his online presence and grow visibility. Since then, he’s gained exposure through both Google and Facebook, regularly getting tagged in local recommendation threads.
"I didn’t realise how powerful Facebook was until recently - it’s a time-waster, sure, but it’s also been a great tool for growing the business and getting my name out there."
Now, both websites (Scott’s Flooring and Scott’s Building Services) help reinforce his reputation, showcase his work, and capture leads from people who already know they want to work with someone local and trusted.
Working with Kath
"Kath provides fantastic service, always has a smile, and goes the extra mile. She’s local, community-minded, and genuinely cares; supporting not-for-profits and giving back. Not everyone thinks outside themselves, but Kath absolutely does. She definitely carries good vibes and we love being associated with OMG Solutions."
Learning and growing
Like many sole operators, Mike juggles everything - from quoting and installing to managing cashflow and finding time for family. He’s learning to be more selective with jobs, reminding himself that not every opportunity is worth sacrificing time with loved ones.
"I’ve had to learn that if the bills are paid, it’s okay to say no. Finding that work-life balance is the hardest part."
Mike’s advice for new business owners?
"Don’t grow too fast. Manage your overheads carefully and always plan for GST and tax - it’s a trap for young players. Surround yourself with good people and look after your clients. That’s what really matters."
